Sophia was the name of an early saint who died of grief after her three daughters were martyred during the reign of the emperor Hadrian. Legends about her arose as a result of a medieval misunderstanding of the phrase Hagia Sophia "Holy Wisdom", which is the name of a large basilica in Constantinople rebuilt in the 6th century, under the Byzantine emperor Justinian(a Roman emperor of the East who ruled from 527 until his death).
From their noun basileus, meaning “king,” the Greeks derived the adjective basilikos meaning “royal.” In ancient Thera there was a public building called “Basilike stoa,” or Royal portico, and it may have been the prototype of later Roman basilicas.
