ROCKET POLLUTION

Wrecking the livable to reach the unlivable Some might find it ironic that an organization like NASA, who studies our atmosphere, is "Ok!" with rockets polluting it so much.
Isn’t it weird that Elon Musk, the same person who is pushing sustainable energy with Tesla, also has a rocket company that runs on fossil fuels?
Jeff Bezos pledges 10 billion dollars to help combat climate change.
He will soon be frequently launching a rocket almost the size of the Saturn V moon rocket.

Isn’t this all a little bit hypocritical?

What about when parts are thrown away in the oceans or on land?
What about space debris?

The U.S. environmental protection agency, or EPA, considers nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and carbon monoxides as pollutants.
Solid rocket boosters are the dirtiest of rocket propulsion.
They emit primarily aluminum oxide, soot or black carbon, CO2, hydrogen chloride and nitrogen oxides.

RP-1 is a highly refined jet fuel.
When burnt, it will produce CO2, NOx, carbon soot, carbon monoxide which again mostly becomes CO2.

RP-1 is used during:
- the first stage of the Saturn V, the Falcon 9 and the Falcon Heavy
- the core stage of the Atlas V, Soyuz, and Rocket Lab’s Electron

Hypergolic Fuel includes hydrazine which is extremely toxic.
When burnt, hypergolics are similar to RP-1, producing mostly CO2.

Methalox is methane and liquid oxygen.
When burnt, it becomes CO2.
SpaceX’s Starship, Blue Origin’s New Glenn’s first stage and ULA’s Vulcan first stage are all running methane.

Two examples of the amount of CO2 emissions:

TITAN II [Space Launch Vehicle] >>> 36 metric tonnes
ELON MUSK'S SPACE X STARSHIP >>> 2,683 metric tonnes

The global average per person >>> 1/77th of 1 tonne per day

Elon Musk's 1 day rocket launch = 206, 591 people's CO2 emissions!
